I was born in California. My dad was in the service. He gave me the opportunity to move often and meet new people and make new friends in Japan, up and down the west coast, from Canada to Mexico, and on the east coast. I learned at an early age how diverse and how alike people really are.
In 1965, I moved to Beatty, Nye County, Nevada, married Dean Wehrly, who was a Deputy Sheriff. We moved to Pahrump in May 1966 and by 1969 we were parents of two children. I loved that life, true freedom and friendship. Sometime in 1970, I went back to work doing odd jobs, volunteering time to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office when they needed a female to assist with female suspects, I managed an insurance agency and did auto dealer trading. In 1972, I became a single mother.
I volunteered as a fire fighter, was one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians in Nevada, and worked with Para-military organizations. My career spanned 25 years and consisted of everything from managing securities, to counterintelligence, to training tactical responses.
I was the first female to complete the Department of Energy Special Weapons and Tactics course; the first female Department of Energy Certified Firearms Instructor to teach handgun, rifle, machinegun, and pyrotechnics, and the first female promoted to Lieutenant Field Operations supervising security police response personnel at the Nevada Test Site.
I have worked in and for Nye County and Nye County citizens most all my adult life. I truly have a vested interest in Nye County. Why do I want to lead the Nye County Sheriff’s Office into the future? I have the tools, the credentials, the desire, the experience, the integrity, and the ability to grow the Nye County Sheriff’s Office into an accredited department we can be proud to call our own.
